Bunad shoes

Folk costumes and bunads

Folk costumes were the clothes used by ordinary people for work and leisure and there were clear norms for what to wear on different occasions. Since their appearance and style were decided by local traditions, folk costumes also revealed what part of the country the wearer came from. In the latter part of the nineteenth century, folk costumes gradually went out of fashion in Norway. However, in Fana, Hallingdal and the Sami areas in the north, folk costumes were in use right up until modern times. Today’s ‘bunads’ are copies of traditional festive folk costumes.
